PRIVACY

What this website does with your data

The short version: the only personal things we hold are your email address and what a payment needs, and there is no tracking. This page covers the website; the iPhone, iPad and Mac app has its own policy, linked at the bottom.

Your account

A GainScout account is just your email address. There is no password: signing in sends a single-use link to your email, and clicking it signs this browser in. We store your email, when the account was made, your checks and reports, and nothing else about you. The signed-in state is held in one cookie containing a random identifier.

Running a check

When you check a piece of land, the coordinates of the pin are sent to this site's server, which asks the official public datasets about that point: planning.data.gov.uk, Natural England and Defra map services, and OpenStreetMap's Nominatim service for the place name (postcodes go to postcodes.io). Only the coordinates are sent to those services, never who asked. We count your checks against your account's free allowance, and we run no analytics or advertising trackers. Like almost every website, the hosting service (Cloudflare) keeps short-lived technical logs, which include IP addresses, to run and protect the service.

Reports

Your report balance belongs to your account, so it is there on any device you sign in to. A report you make is stored on our server so that its link keeps working; it contains the findings for the spot you checked and nothing about you. Sign-in emails are sent through Resend, our email provider, which processes your address for that purpose.

Paying

Payments are handled by Stripe, our payment provider and merchant of record. Your card details go to Stripe, never to us; we never see or store them. Stripe's own privacy policy applies to the payment itself.
